Please read the enclosed article and give me your feedback in the office or via email. Following the link is a brief statement from a colleague that I think is right on.

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande?currentPage=all

Professionalism and High-Cost Health Care
By Stephen M. Perle, DC, MS

The June 1 issue of the New Yorker magazine has an excellent article about what drives up the cost of health care: “The Cost Conundrum: What a Texas town can teach us about health care” by Atul Gawande, MD. In the article, Dr. Gawande compares the cost of health care in McAllen, Texas, and in nearby El Paso. The two areas have basically the same demographics and health statistics, so it’s not the people. They both have similar healthcare technology, so it’s not the infrastructure. And their cost of living is about the same. Yet, McAllen’s Medicare expenses are about twice those of El Paso. The only city in America with higher medical costs is Miami, and it has a much higher cost of living (one would think the higher cost of living would lead to better health outcomes, but it does not). On the other hand, Rochester, Minn., home of the Mayo Clinic, has one of the lowest rates of medical costs per patient.

I suggest reading the article, but my take on it is very simple: The doctors at the Mayo Clinic live up to the moral principle that created the social contract whereby society grants autonomy to professionals (classically, this includes clergy, attorneys and those in the healthcare field). Society created the social contract because it lacked the knowledge needed to properly understand and regulate the professions. The contract states that professions receive autonomy to practice as long as they subjugate the needs of the profession and individual professionals to the needs of the patient, parishioner or client. The Latin phrase credat emptor replaces caveat emptor. The latter, we all know, means “Let the buyer beware.” The former, however, is “Let the buyer have faith”—faith that the professional’s recommendations are in the buyer’s best interest, not the professional’s.

What does this mean with respect to McAllen, Texas? Dr. Gawande’s research shows that the problem causing the inflated healthcare costs is an almost unconscious attempt by healthcare providers to avoid “leaving money on the table” by billing for everything possible—regardless of a patient’s actual need.

In the past, every study examining the cost of chiropractic care compared with medicine showed that we were a more cost-effective intervention. More recent studies have the opposite finding. For whatever reason, some in our profession have put their profit ahead of their patients’ needs. We must keep in mind that professionalism matters. Until the prevailing ethic among all healthcare providers (doctors of chiropractic included) stops being the health of their wallets and properly returns to patients’ health and the value patients receive from our care, no effort will reduce costs and increase health and wellness.

Dr. Perle is a professor of clinical sciences at the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, where he has taught an ethics course for more than 15 years.

Thanks! But think about what we took for granted....

Overnight your hair and fingernails grew a little bit, your skin made billions of new cells, your metabolism slowed down and your heart beat more slowly and all the chemical equations which took place in your body did not need conscious thought. Outside in your lawn, new leaves began to develop as moisture and nutrients were brought up from the root system to produce oxygen. The grass might be just high enough to cut. The earth and moon made another trip around the sun, which is just a little bit higher in today’s sky than yesterday. Even the stars moved a little and light we see from them is possible years old.

It's no wonder we take things for granted and assume very little is changing and therefore does not get our attention. We are amazed at children as they grow up because every few days there is a subtle difference in the way they act or the way they look. After 18 years of growth, people become less interested in us because we don't look much different on the outside than we did 12 months ago.

In our fast paced world we forget that there are billions of things happening every second that we can't see or feel so we think they don't exist. Take a minute to acknowledge yourself for sticking around another day and all the "work" you accomplished. :-)

Grace is always there.(written by a fellow colleague)

Epidemic in our society is living a life that is outgoing and action oriented. We seem to feel that life is "out there" somewhere. We feel that to heal we need to "do" something. If we're a doctor, we feel we need to "give" an adjustment of treatment, or to "do" something to the person we are working with.

In deeper, truer healing states, however, there is not so much something done as much as something received by both the doctor and the one being healed. Healing is not so much external as it is internal.

The power of healing comes from our state of receptivity. Receptivity is part of the feminine principle in the yin/yang balance cycle, so I shall refer to Innate as "she" when receiving her in a heightened state of awareness and openness and readiness for healing.

Where is Innate and what is Innate? We feel her when we look around. We feel her when we look inside. She directs our breath, our thoughts, and our heartbeat. We see her in the colors one wears, in the gleam of a piece of jewelry, in the light and shadow in one's eyes. She is in the vibrancy of the sky and the sound of the air around us.

When we agree to allow a healing state into our lives, we feel her in the field around us. She talks through people, places and things.

When we approach someone we are serving in a healing capacity with reverence, we feel in their field where she is weak and strong... where she needs to move and from what trap she needs to be released. She tells our hands what to do, where to go and how to embrace her.

As chiropractors, we observe how we feel when contacting certain areas of the spine. She talks back to us in music, vibration, symbols, or sensations. We feel her in our own breath as we receive the information. She wiggles and tingles in our spine, moving with each thought, touch and intent. We feel her when we match the tone of the person being healed and where he or she is at, and not where we want that person to be, or where we feel Innate is in them, right NOW.

"The power of healing comes from our state of receptivity."

We feel her in our fingertips. We feel her in our pelvis as we agree to keep her dynamic energy and wisdom free in ourselves. We feel her direct our hands, sometimes forcefully, sometimes gently.

She is a guiding force, a knowingness. She carries in her wake divine wisdom. She coordinates all activities in our bodies and all interactions in the spheres of the universe. She orchestrates life.

We merge in her love and feel thankful and full. After the kiss of Innate is released from our fingertips, we swiftly move on trusting her power and direction to activate the healing and awaken the one being healed. At the same time of releasing ourselves to her wisdom, we free ourselves to connect with our own innate.

What have we done? Who has done it? What is this life that moves through us, instead of happening to us? She makes our life hallowed when we receive her. She will bless us, and help us bless ourselves. How do we receive her?

When the "I" moves out of the way, she will come. When we surrender to her all-knowingness, we become her all-knowingness. Let us be servants of this power and therefore become masters of our own life.

Let us receive her Grace. Eastern mystics say, "Grace is always there. It is we who put up the veils and are not receptive." In the same way, Innate is always there. Let us remove the obstacles and feel her and allow her beauty and wisdom to flow into our lives.

Let us be receptive to this never-ending, abundant stream of life moving through us, for she is the healing power and her gifts will set us free.

Jan Viaforia, D.C.

What can Chiropractic do for?...

People who have had little exposure to the health restoring and health maintaining aspect of chiropractic usually want to know what chiropractic can do for a particular disease or condition, or a number of different conditions. This perception of chiropractic, while incorrect, is based on two very legitimate misconceptions.

First, they have probably met and talked with people who have gotten well from a variety of physical ailments while under chiropractic care. This leads to the incorrect conclusion that chiropractic or the chiropractor got them well.

The second is not related to experience but to a way of thinking. Most people have been led to believe that disease is something that attacks the body and must be fought or in some way destroyed. They are accustomed to health care being disease-driven and naturally address their attention toward the disease and ridding the body of it.

Chiropractic is a completely different approach. It does not address disease or its treatment or cure. Chiropractic concerns itself with the correction of vertebral subluxations.

Subluxations, or vertebral misalignments, interfere with the proper function of the nervous system and prevent the body's inborn potential from being realized. Those potentials are in a number of areas of well-being and health, not the least of which is the ability of the body to heal itself of medical conditions and diseases.

There are a number of other areas of life (social, mental and intellectual) that are just as drastically affected by interference in the nervous system. All are related to our body's ability to adapt. But the most obvious one is in the area of self-healing.

A body, when free of subluxation or when the interference has been lessened, has greater potential to heal itself of all medical conditions. Often it does, and these instances are the ones that seem to impress the average person, causing them to believe that chiropractic can cure or help various medical conditions. It is an understandable error, but an error nonetheless.

The living body has the ability to do what no doctor of any kind is able to do. It can create living tissue to replace diseased and dead cells. Just as the body will heal a cut finger or mend a broken bone without any thought or action on our part, so it is able to create new cells to repair itself. The principle that creates a living human being in approximately nine months out of two small cells is the same principle that heals. Healing truly comes from within. The chiropractor's role is relatively simple: that of removing interference within the human body.

What can chiropractic do for headaches, backaches, asthma, diabetes or cancer? Nothing. The objective of the chiropractor is not to treat or cure diseases. The question that should be asked is: "What can the body do for those diseases?" The answer to that one is quite the opposite: Everything.

Every disease that was ever cured in every patient who ever lived was cured because the body healed itself. The best any medical doctor has ever been able to do in "curing" someone is relieve the symptoms until the body cured itself. That is the medical objective. Removing interference in order to allow the body to perform its task is the chiropractic objective. Once the chiropractic objective has been realized, the chiropractor has done all that he or she is able to do. It is then up to the innate intelligence of the body to do the rest. The wisdom which creates a living human being in nine months time has the capability of producing insulin where it couldn't be produced before. It can heal an ulcer, fight off an infection, and cure the incurable common cold.

Chiropractic cannot do anything for any disease. It can allow the body of every living person to express itself, free of interference in the nervous system. Each human being with a diagnosed disease, an undiagnosed disease, or with no disease needs to have his or her body functioning with a good nerve supply. That is essential to health and is reason enough for seeking regular chiropractic care.Health is for everyone!

Make sure you tell others about the benefits of chiropractic!
TAKE TIME TO LAUGH

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?A:
Are you crazy? HELLO ..... Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

MIRACLES OR EXPECTATIONS?

What is a miracle? Larry Dossey, M.D. explores this question in a recent article available at our office titled "Canceled Funerals: A Look at Miracle Cures". Dr. Dossey asks some good questions including, "Do miracles really happen?" He states, "It depends of course, on what we mean by a miracle. Hard-core materialists believe the idea of a miracle is absurd. Other individuals, however, believe that the laws of nature are not absolute; they can be suspended temporarily, permitting miracles to happen. And in any case, they say, because our knowledge of nature's laws is certain to be incomplete, we should be cautious in declaring what can and cannot happen."
Whether miracles occur or not is a personal opinion. However, I totally agree with the concept of our awareness of nature's or the body's ability being incomplete. In my 24 years of being a Chiropractor I've witnessed things that seemed impossible; beyond the limitations of science, time and matter. What this has taught me is to be humble, respectful and non-judgmental when it comes to a persons innate healing potential. Far be it form me to put a limit on what your body is capable of. I would like you to share that belief in the simple way of expanding the possibilities of what your body can do when it's healthy. Beginning in 1895 the Chiropractic principle has stressed the idea of a universal intelligence at work within you, striving to maintain life. This concept is even more valuable today because we tend to look outside of our body for answers to better health. We have reversed the concept of gaining knowledge for the 'tree of life' and instead look to the tree of knowledge to learn about life. You decide: Life comes form knowledge or knowledge comes from life. Are you ready to expect a miracle?

Flu shots?

Many patients have asked me about my opinion on flu shots. This is a very normal response from a hospital when the xrays show no fractures or pathologies. Just because there are no osseous problems (bones) doesn't mean the patient is fine. As chiropractors we deal with the alignment, bio mechanics, nerves, muscles and surrounding soft tissue. type='text'>Economic crisis explained

Like many of you, I've been following the economic crisis for some time with great interest. I always like to understand as best as I can the cause and effect of things around us. As a big public radio listener for years I've been a fan of "Fresh Air" and "This American Life" for their insightful interviews and perspective on all sorts of topics. I've been referring a few patients to some specific programs I've heard over the past year that talk about the economy and i wanted to post the links for those specific shows. So follow though if you want more details on how we got into this mess.

PS. you can set up your itunes program to grab these shows each week automatically if you want to download and listen to them on your ipod. I like listening to books on tape and these programs when I'm out hiking with our dog, Rita. Maybe you would like to do something similar.

This American Life:

The Giant Pool of Money: Show # 355 5/9/08 http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1242

Another Frightening Show about the Economy: Show # 365 10/3/08

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1263

Bad Bank: Show # 375 2/27/09

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1285

Fresh Air:

These may seem a bit dated, as they were recorded 6 months ago, but I found them fascinating.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94686428

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94928783

This issue is about oil: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95465269

My take on TV drug ads (warning: not for sensitive viewers)

After watching an episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" (yes your doctor is intrigued by trash TV, like everyone else) I couldn't get over how many advertisements were promoting pharmaceuticals. I read years ago that 1 in 5 ads were pushing prescription drugs; 20%, WOW!

We'll today, my friend Didi sent me a new ad promising to make women more assertive and less shy. The ad actually follows the tried and true formula of other drug ads; find a problem, exploit it, promise solutions and warn you of all the side effects. Check it out, unlike a lot of drug ads, this one's very factual. Please read the warning labels before taking!

IMPORTANT HEALTH ADVICE FOR WOMEN
Do you have feelings of inadequacy?Do you suffer from shyness?Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive? If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Margaritas.Margaritas are the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident about yourself and your actions.Margaritas can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you're ready and willing to do just about anything. You will notice the benefits of Margaritas almost immediately and with a regimen of regular doses you can overcome any obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want to live.Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past and you will discover many talents you never knew you had. Through personal experience and published research articles http://www.erchonia.com/default.asp?contentID=48 http://www.erchonia.com/default.asp?contentID=106 the results are overwhelmingly positive to achieve changes in the body that we couldn't get to in the past. The fact that this is a non-invasive affordable approach to health care makes the laser even more appealing.

The laser works off 2 major principles: It increases cellular communication and improves cellular regeneration. We've seen the laser work amazingly well on wound and tissue healing in acute and chronic injuries from sprains and strains to old scar tissue . The application of the laser covers many symptomatic problem areas and will be used to support the changes we initiate with the spinal adjustment/entrainment. Normally it takes 5 to 10 laser sessions to treat an area.

Our first laser workshop on February 23rd http://www.drcerami.com/pdfs/0209Workshops.pdf has filled almost immediately so we are planning at least 2 more in March and April. Please email us or call the office to attend these free seminars and get informed so you can decide whether the laser is for you.

Awesome photos from a stingray migration

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301975065535499506" style="FLOAT: left; on just how big a trillion dollars is, think about it like this: A trillion dollars is the number 1 followed by 12 zeroes.

Or you can think of it this way: "To put a trillion dollars in context, if you spend a million dollars every day since Jesus was born, you still wouldn't have spent a trillion," McConnell said. CNN checked McConnell's numbers with noted Temple University math professor and author John Allen Paulos."A million dollars a day for 2,000 years is only three-quarters of a trillion dollars. It's a big number no matter how you slice it," Paulos said.

Here's another way to look at it.
"A million seconds is about 11½ days. A billion seconds is about 32 years, and a trillion seconds is 32,000 years," Paulos said. "People tend to lump them together, perhaps because they rhyme, but if you think of it in terms of a jail sentence, do you want to go to jail for 11½ days or 32 years or maybe 32,000 years? Health has more to do with how healthy your body is and not whether you ate something that's going to make you sick. We'll be discussing this topic at our Monday workshop in March 2009. Best deals I found were at Audible and Amazon. Note:You can get a good synopsis of each book by Googling the title as I can't match the experts summary skills :-)

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell; Another great book by the author that brought us "The Tipping Point" and "Blink". IMHO this is his best book yet. Every chapter has examples of situations that effect not only our success but also our decision making. I really enjoyed his idea of the 10,000 hour rule. Check it out.

Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman; This book discussed in detail how a green revolution can renew America, now more than ever. I saw a lot of parallels between our national energy policy (or lack of one0 and our health care policy (also missing). A good read to dispel old myths and present new ideas for a new world.
Side note: Friedman will be speaking locally on March 10th:http://www.umnh.utah.edu/nature

The Post American World by Fareed Zakaria; A nice follow up to Hot, Flat, Crowded . This Newsweek writer and CNN TV Host presents our world as changing rapidly and we need to get on board and understand this is not the place you once thought it was.

Movie recommendation: I give Slumdog Millionaire two big thumbs up!

Cleaner air means a longer life?

Physical, Chemical and emotional stressors affect our quality of life.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/healthNewsMolt/idUKTRE50K74220090122

Health Care Reform at a Local Level

Last month I had the opportunity to be involved with a group of local physicians and health care providers coordinating needs for the new administration in Washington. The Obama transition team has sought advice from a local level on what the needs of the community are and to pass those suggestions on to the new Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Daschle. Our group know as #762 summarized our our report on December 27, 2008 and it can be found here:

Special thanks to Bill R. for all of his efforts!

http://www.scribd.com/doc/11451889/Group762122708final?secret_password=2h3ytiipn88fua3xr7qw

Nutritional Supplements- Every day for all people

Here's link to some good information on supplementation as we've been receiving a lot of questions about nutritional needs recently. There is overwhelming evidence that our environment and lifestyle puts excessive demands on the body's chemistry needs. So even if you are practicing a good diet or a vegetarian as I am, you need additional nutritional support to decrease the inflammatory processes occurring internally. I have plenty of references if you need any more information please email us.

Note: I might suggest you try a month of this program and see what you notice.

Here's the link:http://www.danmurphydc.com/Every_Day_Nutrition.pdf

Vegas Baby

Kate and I just returned from an awesome Chiropractic seminar with dozens of speakers discussing, healing, research and health care.
